The U.S. currently has 75 George Soros-backed prosecutors overseeing half of America’s 50 most populous cities, according to a new report from the Law Enforcement Legal Defense Fund (LELDF).
While some states set contribution limits for city and county-level candidates, many do not, or have much more lenient rules than for federal or statewide candidates. This allows for free-for-all spending from individuals, parties, unions, corporations, and political action committees in many city and county district attorney races across the country.
Between 2018 and 2021, Soros spent $13 million on a total of 10 district attorney races using a combination of shell organizations, affiliates, and pass-through committees, the report estimates.
In those races, Soros-backed groups “were by far the biggest spender in the race and comprised the majority of the progressive candidate’s campaign spending,” according to the report.
“Over the past decade, George Soros has spent $40 million to elect 75 of his chosen prosecutors,” LELDF President Jason Johnson told The National Desk (TND) in a statement. “In campaigns from Houston and Los Angeles to Philadelphia and Orlando, Soros was the campaign’s biggest spender by far – as much as 90% of the dollars spent in some races.”
The bulk of spending in DA races over the last several years “has been done by (or on behalf of) ‘social justice’ candidates,” asserts LELDF. “Over the past decade, a wave of ‘social justice’ candidates have been elected as the chief prosecutor in jurisdictions across the United States. Most of these prosecutors pursue radical justice policies upon assuming office including eliminating bail, dismissing felony cases, and seeking lenient sentences while creating antagonistic relationships with their public safety partners, especially the police.
LELDF notes in its report that when most of these “social justice” prosecutors were elected, they had little to no political or prosecutorial experience.
Violence surged after many of them took office too, claims LELDF, which notes the increases happened prior to the nationwide crime spike that took place in 2020.
When considering crime volume, more than 40% of the approximately 22,500 homicides nationwide occurred in areas overseen by these DAs, asserts the report.
Once in office “a constellation of well-funded but recently established groups” assist these progressive prosecutors via additional campaign spending, professional organizations, research, and strategic communications efforts, according to the report.
In 2018 and 2019, Baltimore City State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby was provided over $30,000 in global travel, airfare, and lodging reimbursements after winning her seat in office. While there were no direct connections indicating Soros funded, or helped fund, this international travel by Mosby, at least one major group from his network did, according to Fox 45 in Baltimore.
