As the attorney general of Virginia, I firmly believe that we must stand with the brave police officers who protect our communities. One way we can do this is by ensuring we have prosecutors who will enforce our laws.
In 2022, 246 officers woke up, put on their uniforms, said goodbye to their families, and tragically never came home. Included in this list are 60 officers who were shot in the line of duty. Another 20 died in car accidents. An officer was even killed while in training, working to reinforce his skills, so he could better serve his fellow citizens.
With National Police Week upon us, we honor those who have given their lives and those who protect our communities from criminals, both repeat offenders and first-time lawbreakers who turn to violence.
Tragically, liberal progressives and their financial backers, including George Soros, have taken terrible incidents, such as the murder of George Floyd, which was roundly condemned by law enforcement, and weaponized these incidents to make the public believe law enforcement is our enemy, not our ally.
Nearly three years later in Minneapolis, our judicial system worked — all four officers were found guilty of murder and are in prison. And yet, calls from the radical Left to “defund” the police continue.
Bipartisan majorities have rejected the Soros-backed idea of defunding the police because regular Americans know it will make their communities less safe, and crime will increase. As a result, these radical progressives know now that they can’t defund the police through legislatures, so instead, they are trying to constrain police by recruiting and electing prosecutors who refuse to enforce the laws that are in place.
This week, when we wear our solid black mourning bands and thank our local police officers for protecting our communities, let us remember that our judicial system must support law enforcement if either are to effectively do their jobs.
In addition to serving as Virginia’s top cop, I am also the chairman of the Protecting Americans Action Fund, where we work to elect prosecutors who are committed to enforcing the law and holding criminals accountable without undermining the work that our police officers do. Our country needs more prosecutors who will enforce our laws instead of partisan prosecutors who deliberately circumvent the legislative branch’s responsibility of writing our laws for political gain.
