Va. Attorney Gen. Jason Miyares urges DC leaders to address crime spike.  “Virginia Attorney Gen. Jason Miyares wrote a letter to D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and the D.C. Council on Thursday, calling out city officials for not doing enough to combat crime.  ‘D.C. is dealing with a crime explosion,’ Miyares said.  ‘Actions speak louder than words — and the only actionable items taken by Washington, D.C. leadership have been ways to lessen criminal penalties, further fostering an environment for criminal activity. There is no deterrent for illegal behavior in Washington, D.C., as these repeat offenders know they will either not be charged or let back on the streets in no time.’” (WTOP, 04/06/23)

Virginia AG slams Bowser over ‘crime explosion’ after brutal stabbing in Ivy City. “Washington, D.C. is dealing with a ‘crime explosion,’ according to Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares who sent a letter to Mayor Muriel Bowser Thursday urging her to fix it.  Miyares says D.C.’s crime problem has become Virginia’s crime problem, and Bowser and the city council have lost control protecting residents and the thousands of Virginians who commute into the District for work or entertainment.” (Fox 5 DC, 04/06/23)

‘DC’s crime problem has become Virginia’s crime problem.’ “The commonwealth’s Attorney General Jason Miyares is demanding action from D.C. officials after a Virginia woman was brutally murdered in her hotel room.  Last weekend, Christy Bautista was stabbed to death while visiting D.C. for a concert. Officers say they all but caught a bloody man, George Sydnor, Jr., red-handed after he allegedly stabbed Bautista 30 times in the chest, the back and the head.” (WUSA, 04/06/23)

Virginia AG chides District for ‘crime explosion’ after woman’s slaying in Northeast hotel. “Virginia’s attorney general is saying that the District’s ‘crime explosion’ is now affecting the neighboring commonwealth in the wake of Christy Bautista’s slaying at a D.C. hotel last week. Top prosecutor Jason Miyares said it’s become clear that D.C.’s leaders can’t protect the thousands of Virginians who go to the nation’s capital every day — let alone its own residents — in a Thursday letter addressed to D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and Council Chairman Phil Mendelson. He pointed out that Virginia residents Aaron Bourne, Kenithy Manns and Ahmad Clark were killed in the District over the past three years.” (Washington Times, 04/06/23)

Virginia Attorney General Criticizes Bowser And D.C. Council Over ‘Crime Explosion’ In City. “Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares on Thursday told D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and the D.C. Council that a ‘crime explosion’ in the city has put Virginia residents at risk, and asked the lawmakers to ‘address the scourge of violent crime that is growing more intolerable by the day.’” (DCist, 04/06/23)

D.C. Crime is VA Crime; Miyares Urges D.C. Leaders to Take Meaningful Action. “General Jason Miyares has sent a letter to Washington, D.C. Mayor Bowser and the D.C. City Council regarding their inability and refusal to enforce their public safety laws and address their crime spike. This silence puts their residents and Virginians in danger.  The letter is a direct response to the tragic murder of Christy Bautista over the weekend. Bautista was visiting D.C. from Harrisonburg for a concert, when she was murdered in her hotel room.  ‘Washington, D.C., is dealing with a crime explosion. Actions speak louder than words – and the only actionable items taken by Washington D.C. leadership have been ways to lessen criminal penalties, further fostering an environment for criminal activity. There is no deterrent for illegal behavior in Washington, D.C., as these repeat offenders know they will either not be charged or let back on the streets in no time,’ Miyares wrote in the letter.” (The Roanoke Star, 04/06/23)
